After patriarch Julio Madariaga (Lee J. Cobb) dies, his family scatters to different European countries. Heinrich von Hartrott (Karl Boehm) rises within the German ranks; Julio Desnoyers (Glenn Ford) enjoys the good life in Paris, even when the Germans occupy the city, and Chi-Chi Desnoyers (Yvette Mimieux) joins the French Resistance. But when Julio falls in love with Marguerite (Ingrid Thulin), he begins to understand the Nazis--and that he must make a stand in the fight against evil.
